Our Planet Reviewed - Expedition Papua New-guinea

Objectives

Our planet reviewed

Better understanding for better conservation

The results obtained within the frame of the expeditions “Our Planet Reviewed” will allow for the completion of knowledge about marine as well as terrestrial biodiversity. They will also serve to create the tools which are required for the establishment of politics of conservation adapted to the respective regions by the NGO and the governments of the host countries. Against this background, the inventories established within the frame of “La Planète Revisitée” will also aim at shortening the “taxonomic time”: usually 9 months pass between the moment when a new species is collected on the respective territory and the moment when its description appears in scientific literature. With the further development of know-how, the utilisation of new technologies and the definition of priorities, researchers taking part in “La Planète Revisitée” reduce the time between the collection, analysis and provision of information for those responsible for the conservation. Their inventories will also allow for a discussion of the term hotspot, a notion which continues to feed the scientific debate even 15 years after its invention.

Finally, the scientists of “La Planète Revisitée” aim at replacing the naturalists’ exhibitions in the context of human societies. By initiating cooperation between paleoclimatologists, archaeologists, ethnologists, jurists and economists but also journalists, illustrators, teachers and film makers, they hope to give rise to a feeling of cultural appropriation of biodiversity and to create an awareness for the importance of its preservation.
This is an ambitious programme which is however indispensable if one hopes to change things before the loss of biodiversity accelerates.
